Fellowship and Discipleship

In one of his many exhortations in favor of Christian fellowship, St. Paul wrote: “Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing. (I Thessalonians 5:11).

Sunday by Sunday at Immanuel, we seek God’s grace to help us do just that, at the Coffee Hour that immediately follows our 11 a.m. Liturgy. We also look forward to get-togethers at special events through the year, like our Easter potluck supper and our Christmas party. All our welcome to participate in these events, and, if desired, to contribute to the bounty with homemade culinary creations.

From time to time, we host bazaars, with many members contributing their treasures for sale to aid our church, and also contributing their time and energy to do the actual selling. It’s always a fun event.

Fellowship is also a crucial ingredient in our Bible Studies and other classes, offering us a chance to learn and grow together on our walk with Christ.

Immanuel also provides many opportunities to provide service to the congregation, whether by ushering, reading lessons, assisting in the preparation of the altar, and many other roles. We depend on those who can offer their service in this way, so that our liturgies proceed smoothly and to the glory of God.

We likewise do not fail to remember Christian discipleship towards our neighbors. Our “Meals On Heels” program has been in place for decades, with dedicated volunteers preparing meals for the homebound and delivering them on foot each Saturday. We always welcome more help with this blessed work.

Another form of discipleship is the mission which our Pastor Gregory Fryer took on some years back and continues to this day, sometimes with the help of Pastor Lara or Pastor Carol, and that is the Pastor’s Booth. You may well have seen him at the corner of Lexington and 88th Street in his Charlie Brown (Lucy) styled booth, offering spiritual help to passersby for a nickel (actually for free).

Come join us at Immanuel and you are joining a community that with God’s help may come to feel and be an extended family for you.
