Every Saturday since 1987, volunteers from the Immanuel congregation, and their friends and associates, have provided a hot meal to shut-ins referred to Immanuel’s Meals on Heels program by Search and Care, a not-for-profit organization whose mission is to help frail and isolated older people live safely and independently in their own homes on the Upper East Side of Manhattan.
Two teams handle the weekly meals program: those who cook and those who deliver. Cooks can choose to prepare anywhere from 5 to 10 to 20 or more meals consisting of a hot entree, a vegetable and optionally a dessert. Tins are provided, and the program coordinator adds bread and a bottle of milk. Those who volunteer to deliver then take the meals to each of the participant’s apartments on Saturday morning beginning around 11 a.m.
If you would like to cook or deliver meals we would be very grateful. Please contact Barbara Chomko. She is the leader of our program. Her email address is [email protected].
